Here’s my latest iPad Pro drawing. It is a behemoth for this device. 12.5” x 18.5” at the equivalent of 600dpi which is at the current max at that resolution. I am sure future builds of the iPad Pro will allow the program to let me more comfortably illustrate at this size. I only get 4 layers at that resolution, but I have made due with it. The layers allow me to copy and paste sections to speed things up and make certain elements consistent. Look at the two sets of 3 large wheels on the city. I duplicated them and made slight changes to make them a bit different. Same with the circular engine rooms along the body of the vehicle. Also, the tree above and left of the bear balloon I duplicate and changed the foliage on the right side and placed it at the very bottom center of the drawing. Some of the roof windows I did the same. The dirigible, I copied and pasted from another drawing and then I traced over it.
I am just about to start rendering it in color. The file size will only get bigger, but the actually storage memory on the iPad is plenty. It is the RAM that I am concerned with. So far so good. I will use the layers I have available and once I am sure about an area, flatten the layers to reduce memory.

Mobile Mountain Lodge
My drawings are very detailed and hard to see all that is in them on a tiny computer screen, so I made this tour that animates the drawing with sounds. Best viewed in HD if your internet will allow. This was drawn traditionally with pen and ink and colored pencils. I like to keep my paper clean and dent free so that is why I mock the whole thing up on multiple layers of tracing paper before transferring the final sketch onto smooth Arches 90lb watercolor paper to color.

How I Draw
Carrot Spears. Unedited process movie, Procreate, Apple Pencil,iPadPro
This drawing is made to look like colored pencil despite being digital. My technical is somewhat old school as I don't really block out shapes of colors first like many digital artists. The sketch began with a hand drawn, scanned in sketch. I still have a number of these to work on before I do a drawing start to finish on the iPad.

Lunar Carrot City
©2016 Schallau All Rights Reserved |
This was drawn on my iPad with an Apple Pencil in Procreate. My attempt was to mimic my colored pencil style digitally. I have to say, I love the feel of the Apple Pencil. I have gotten used to drawing on glass and don't use a sheet cover.
Some illustrators use a sheet cover to give the surface a smoother feel so their palm slides along smoothly as they use quick strokes, but I usually draw with slow deliberate strokes and need a bit of tackiness. Anyway, I am fine with the feel of the plastic on glass.
The one thing that would be difficult to draw traditionally by pencil on paper would be the reflecting glint marks on the glass domes. I would have to plan that out in the beginning and leave the area white, where as digitally I can add it over the top of the area I colored.
